Sliding Gate Hardware Kits: Sliding Block vs Guide Rollers

Sliding Gate Hardware Kits: Sliding Block vs Guide Rollers

Choosing the right hardware when installing your sliding gate is key to its smooth operation. The track and wheels, together with the guiding system, play an important role in making your aluminium sliding gate easy to use.

At Top Screens, we supply two main types of sliding gate hardware kits:

  • Sliding Block Hardware Kits

  • Guide Rollers Hardware Kits

You can’t go wrong with either of these kits - they’re both quality. The one you end up using depends on the project you’re working on. Let’s take a closer look at the kits to help you land on the right choice.

Sliding Block Hardware Kits

Best suited to

Sliding block systems are suitable for all types of gates - framed, face-mounted and raked - and work well on both level and uneven driveways. They’re particularly handy when you’re working with raked or non-standard gates where a traditional roller system might not align properly.

What’s included

A Sliding Block Hardware Kit comes with:

  • Wheels

  • Aluminium track

  • Stopper

  • 50 mm F-Catcher

  • Sliding block

  • 300 mm C-channel.

How it works

  • A guide channel is attached to the top rail of the gate frame.

  • A post or overhead bracket is installed to support the C-channel.

  • The sliding block connects to both channels and moves up and down as the gate slides, keeping the gate perfectly upright.

This dual-channel setup gives the gate a firm guiding structure, which makes it more forgiving on uneven or raked installations where the gate might not be perfectly level.

Pros

  • Versatile, working with almost any gate type and surface.

  • Handles raked driveways or uneven terrain well.

  • Provides a very stable and guided movement.

  • Ideal when you need a more engineered solution for non-standard gates.

Cons

  • More components required, such as a guide channel welded to the top rail of your gate frame as well as a post or overhead bracket.

  • Takes a bit more time to install compared to rollers.

  • Slightly more technical to set up.

Guide Rollers Hardware Kits

Best suited to

Guide rollers are the simpler option and are best suited to framed gates with less than 100 mm variance between the left and right heights. In other words, they’re ideal for reasonably level framed gates where you don’t need the extra adaptability of a sliding block system.

What’s included

A Guide Rollers Hardware Kit typically includes:

  • Wheels

  • Aluminium track

  • Stopper

  • 50 mm F-Catcher

  • Guide rollers with a bracket.

How it works

Guide rollers are mounted on a post next to the gate. As the gate moves, the rollers run along the gate’s side, holding it upright and in line. There’s no need for a guide channel on the top rail or any overhead structure.

For framed, level gates, this system is quick to install and provides smooth operation without extra parts. In fact, the Top Screens guide notes that if your gate is framed and level, you may prefer guide rollers because they avoid the extra overhead work required for sliding blocks.

Pros

  • Very simple installation — fewer components and no overhead bracket or guide channel required to be welded to your gate frame.

  • Perfect for framed, level gates with minimal height difference.

  • Great for DIY projects or straightforward installs.

  • Clean and tidy finish.

Cons

  • Works best when the gate frame is level. Significant height variance may cause alignment issues.

  • Less suited to raked or uneven driveways.
